Kinds of Policies You Should Look Out for in Home Insurance
Home insurance provides financial protection against damage to your home and personal property, as well as liability for accidents that happen on your property. When shopping for home insurance, it’s important to understand the different types of policies available and what they cover. Watson Insurance Agency provides it in Charlotte, Columbia, SC, Fort Mill, SC, Shelby, NC, Rock Hill, SC, York, SC and surrounding areas.
- HO-1 (Basic Form):

This is the most limited form of home insurance. It only covers a small list of specific perils like fire, theft, and vandalism. Most insurers no longer offer this policy due to its narrow protection.
- HO-2 (Broad Form):
Covers more perils than HO-1, including things like falling objects, weight of ice/snow, and accidental water discharge. However, it still lists named perils, so anything not specifically mentioned isn’t covered.
- HO-3 (Special Form):
The most common and widely recommended policy. It provides “open peril” coverage for your home, meaning it covers everything except what’s specifically excluded. Personal property, though, is still covered on a named-peril basis.
- HO-4 (Renter’s Insurance):
Designed for tenants, this policy covers personal belongings and liability, but not the physical structure, which is the landlord’s responsibility.
- HO-5 (Comprehensive Form):
Offers the broadest protection. It provides open-peril coverage for both the structure and personal property, with higher coverage limits and fewer restrictions.
- HO-6 (Condo Insurance):
For condo owners, it covers the interior of the unit and personal property. The building’s exterior is usually covered by a master policy held by the condo association.
- HO-7 and HO-8:
HO-7 is for mobile or manufactured homes, while HO-8 is tailored for older or historic homes where replacement cost exceeds market value.
Key Tip:
Always review what’s included, excluded, and any add-ons (like flood or earthquake insurance) based on your location and needs.
